Oooo - The dream of Gogol, Sfumato Company

Co-hosted with The Seoul Performing Arts Festival

Introduction

Sfumato Company presents 4 stages of Gogol including 'Nevsky Prospect', 'Ivan Fyodorovich Shponka and his aunt', 'Marriage' and 'Diary of a crazy man'. Celebrating the 200th year after Gogol's birth, his stories are revealed, connected as segments of a dream, through exaggerated and mysterious characters. Original acting, visual schemes and fantastic music will bring the audience to a new world of Gogol's fantasy. Directors, Margarita Mladenova & Ivan Dobchev has made the characters after the vision of Gogol in silhouette timidly walking Nevsky avenue with his coat around him. These characters live in a ghost city along with devils and ghosts, where Gogol once said was inspired by the city of heaven, Jerusalem. And there are all in a way, the replicas of Gogol containing his personality such as anxiety, desire and desperation. They altogether are like Gogol, as David in front of Goliath, Oedipus in front of Spinx and a snail in front of a huge mountain, are in front of the quiz of genesis. Whether it is outer space and inner space, the visible and the invisible, dream and insomnia, ecstasy and despair, at any occasion of contradiction, they scream out for life. On one side, they claim to fulfill destiny and on the other side, feel deep anxiety. Marriage has been one of the oldest trap in life, in which people try to hold on to their private space from confusion. As once said by Gogol, 'Success is a form of death, as in failure is an opportunity of revival', his genius is not in logic but in true contradiction. If not, how could you explain the nature of human being running away from the happiness he has ever longed for? 'Oooo - The dream of Gogol' was premiered in March, 2009 and performed in Meyerhold Centre, Moscow and Komisarjevskaja Theatre, Saint Petersburg in September, 2009.
